Replacement of variable speed drives and adaptation of PLC in naval air conditioning for Electrosur

Mantenimiento y sustitución de componentes eléctricos para sistema de climatización de un barco

Company

Electrosur is a company specializing in electrical services and boat maintenance that operates in the ports of Algeciras and Tarifa.

In one of its projects, they faced a critical failure in a ship's air conditioning system, specifically in one of its main compressors.

Challenge

Replace a faulty and discontinued frequency converter with a modern model, adapting the entire electrical installation and control system to ensure the proper functioning of the boat's air conditioning.

Problem

  • Obsolete and discontinued drive: The original equipment could not be repaired or directly replaced with an equivalent model.
  • Technical incompatibility: The new drive required modifications to wiring, signals, and control logic.
  • Critical system for the vessel: Air conditioning is essential for the boat's operability and habitability.
  • Need for safe start-up: It was essential to ensure stable operation after the system adaptation.

Solution

How we do it?

We carried out comprehensive engineering and automation work to adapt the existing system.

  • Electrical engineering: We redesigned plans and modified the wiring to integrate the new frequency converter.
  • PLC adaptation: We updated the PLC control logic to correctly manage air conditioning with the new drives.
  • Complete integration: We adjusted signals, protections, and communications to ensure compatibility and reliability.
  • Commissioning: We performed functional tests and validated the correct operation of the system under real operating conditions.

Results

  • Fully operational ship air conditioning system with new variable speed drives.
  • Extended service life of the installation without the need to replace the entire system.
  • Stable and efficient operation of climate control via PLC.
  • Successful adaptation of an old installation to current technology.
  • Reduction in downtime and improvement in the operational reliability of the vessel.
