Retrofit and modernization of 30/30 TN bridge cranes at Navantia

retrofit carro grúa 30 / 30 tn y modernización para navantia surcontrol

Company

Navantia is an international leader in shipbuilding and defense systems, with large-scale industrial facilities where lifting systems are critical to production.

Several 30/30-ton overhead cranes had obsolete electrical systems that limited efficiency, reliability, and operational safety.

The objective of the project was to completely recondition the electrical systems of these overhead cranes, improve their efficiency, and increase operational availability.

Challenge

Modernize two 30/30-ton overhead cranes in an active naval environment, replacing old electrical systems with current solutions, without affecting production continuity or operational safety.

Problem

  • Obsolete electrical systems:
Old installations with non-standard wiring, cabinets, contactors, resistors, and variable speed drives.
  • Low energy efficiency:
Absence of regenerative systems that would optimize energy consumption.
  • Risk of breakdowns and downtime:
Higher probability of electrical failures and unplanned downtime.
  • Maintenance limitations:
Difficulty in maintaining and adapting old electrical systems.

Solution

How we do it?

We approach the retrofitting of overhead cranes through a complete electrical modernization, designed to update obsolete systems.

  • Dismantling of old electrical systems
Complete removal of obsolete wiring, electrical cabinets, contactors, resistors, and variable speed drives.
  • New electrical installation
Design and installation of new electrical cabinets and power and control systems adapted to current regulations.
  • Installation of regenerative drives
Implementation of regenerative drives that allow energy to be recovered during braking and load descent cycles.
  • Reconnection, commissioning, and testing
Progressive commissioning, functional testing, and complete system validation.

Results

  • Complete electrical modernization of four 30/30 TN bridge cranes
  • Significant improvement in energy efficiency
  • Greater reliability and reduction in failures
  • Increased service life of the cranes
  • Electrical infrastructure prepared for long-term operation
