Company

Navantia develops advanced naval platforms and autonomous systems for maritime surveillance, support, and reconnaissance missions. Within its unmanned surface vehicle (USV) division, the company required a solution capable of controlling, monitoring, and visualizing in real time the status of an autonomous vessel during remote operations.

The objective was to equip the USV with a unified control, telemetry, and video system that would ensure safe operation, continuous supervision, and immediate response capability from land-based command centers or from a mothership.

Challenge

Design and integrate a complete remote control and video streaming module for an autonomous USV, enabling not only continuous status visualization but also physical operation through a dedicated joystick controller.

The solution had to consolidate navigation, alarms, telemetry, sensors, and onboard cameras into a single interface, maintaining reliability and low latency even in maritime environments with unstable connectivity.

Problem

  • Lack of centralized USV supervision: There was no single tool integrating navigation, alarms, vessel data, and live video.
  • Limited remote control capabilities: The vehicle lacked an advanced remote piloting system for safe and precise maneuvering.
  • Video not accessible during operations: Onboard cameras could not be streamed to land-based operators, limiting decision-making during critical missions
  • Operational risk and reduced reaction capability: Without consolidated telemetry, detecting failures, anomalies, or unexpected behaviors in time was difficult.

Solution

How we do it?

We integrated Ikol USV, a complete remote control, advanced monitoring, and real-time video solution for autonomous surface vehicles.

  • Continuous monitoring and visualizationDedicated dashboards display telemetry, position, heading, system status, alarms, sensors, and critical USV data throughout the mission.
  • Remote control with physical joystick A dedicated hardware controller with joystick was developed, enabling precise and safe piloting from shore, maintaining stable control even during complex maneuvers.
  • Real-time video streaming All onboard cameras transmit continuous live video, providing full situational awareness.
  • Sensor and actuator integration: The system monitors and manages the USV’s sensors and actuators, ensuring reliable mission execution and evaluation.

Operational events are classified and displayed within the platform, improving response capability to incidents or system failures.
